There's no special hardware or secret app involved. A Waze device is a regular smartphone with our MB Smart filter set up in a very restrictive way. We block everything by default, then open up only navigation and a short list of apps you approve. The process is the same on iPhone and Android.
In practice, that means the phone can run Waze for driving directions, but the browser, app store, and everything else stay closed unless you specifically ask us to allow them. Because it's the same MB Smart filter used on filtered smartphones, you can always adjust the allow-list later as your needs change. Since navigation runs over the internet, these devices need a data plan to work. Without data, Waze can't load maps or traffic.
